Card Counting on Black Jack 21- Back Counting Advantages and Disadvantages
Back-counting, also known as “Wonging”, consists of standing behind a blackjack table that other players are playing on, and counting the cards as they are dealt. Stanford Wong first proposed the idea of back-counting, and the term “Wong” comes from his name.
The player will enter or “wong in” to the game when the count reaches a point at which the player has an advantage. The player may then raise their bets as their advantage increases, or lower their bets as their advantage goes down. Some back-counters prefer to flat-bet, and only bet the same amount once they have entered the game. Some players will stay at the table until the game is shuffled, or they may “wong out” or leave when the count reaches a level at which they no longer have an advantage.
“Wonging” is commonly applied to shoe games, consisting of either 4, 6, or 8 decks, but can also be done on pitch games of either 1 or 2 decks as well. The reason, or purpose for this is because the count will be more stable in a shoe game, so you won’t see players getting up from the game after only one or two hands. Not to mention, casinos today prevent a player from starting in the middle of the game, also known as mid-shoe entry, in either a single or double deck game eliminating the chance to “wong” the table. Casinos are putting more pressure in the effort to stop card counters effectiveness on both pitch and shoe games.
There is a difference between card counting and back counting, in which every hand is not played by the player. This adds benefits or advantages, For one, If there isn’t an obvious statistical advantage here, no hands will be played by the player. So while this is minimizing fluctuations and variance, the advantage of the player also increases. Another benefit is that it will not be necessary for a player to make bet changes often, and in some cases, not at all, the process of back counting eliminates this as well.
Unfortunately, there are a few disadvantages to back counting. First, by not staying on a table long enough, casino comps will not be earned. Second, some people may dislike the fact that you are entering the middle of a game, and may also feel the flow of the cards have been interrupted. And last, by coming in and out of a game attracts attention from casino employees, and will be looked at like a card counter.
